A Living Artwork in the Heart of a Brand New Forest
Something extraordinary is taking root between Bristol and Bath.
Echo Wood is a landmark collaboration between artist Luke Jerram and charity Avon Needs Trees – a breathtaking new artwork made not from stone, steel or plastic but from 365 living trees.
Planted this winter, these native trees will slowly grow into a vast 110-metre-wide design:
- Pathways and avenues that guide visitors on a journey through the forest
- A central circular gathering space, formed from 12 English oaks
- An artwork that will take a century to fully emerge – but will endure for generations
The Vision
This living sculpture is part of Lower Chew Forest, a bold new project creating 422 acres of new woodland, orchard, wetlands, and nature-rich habitats between the villages of Compton Dando and Hunstrete, Somerset.
“It’s amazing to have the opportunity to create an artwork that will take decades to fully form, but will last for hundreds of years and bring joy to generations of visitors.”
— Luke Jerram
The trees planted today will grow alongside an expansive and beautiful new forest, providing refuge for wildlife and stand as a powerful symbol in the fight against climate change. One day wood from this artwork will be sustainably harvested and used for good in the wider world—before being replanted to continue the cycle of life.
