"This isn’t just about saving wildlife and biodiversity. It’s also an amazing opportunity for local people. Green spaces make us all happier and healthier. They can have a huge impact on things like local flooding, air and water quality. Let’s call on the next metro mayor to take a stand on an issue that people in the West of England care so deeply about."

Why should I sign the petition?

People in the West of England are passionate about nature and green space. Recent responses to tree felling, building new housing on nature sensitive areas and the support for our own Lower Chew Forest project show that people in the area want climate action.

Partly it’s because they know this kind of action brings with it a range of benefits – from cleaner rivers to reduced flooding, green jobs to neighbourhoods that are better for physical and mental health.

The West of England can lead the way when it comes to nature recovery. With the right leadership, we can take action now and leave a positive legacy for future generations.

That’s why we’re asking candidates to put nature and climate at the heart of their agenda, so that we have the right kind of growth, not growth at any cost. We want bloom, not bust. Read our full demands on our open letter here.

    What's at stake?

Whoever wins this election will have significant influence over decisions that will shape nature’s future in the West of England for the next four years. With the climate and nature in crisis, and a wide range of political views on the ballot, this is a crucial moment for our region.

The Metro Mayor holds real power. From setting the region’s climate strategy to unlocking government funding to invest in green jobs, public transport, and environmental projects, they drive decisions that directly affect nature

.This election will decide whether we take real action on the climate crisis, restore wildlife habitats, and protect communities from flooding – or whether nature is sidelined. It’s also a chance to ensure those most impacted by climate change have a voice in shaping solutions.

Real change starts locally. And it starts with you.

“It’s clear from the headlines that people in the West of England want to see action and leadership on green issues. Nature recovery isn’t us or the planet. It benefits all of us and will play a critical role in stopping the worst effects of climate change. Join us in calling on the next metro mayor to meet the moment, to commit to positive action for local communities.”

“Nature recovery affects all of us, whether it’s clean rivers, halting the decline of wildlife, preventing floods, new green jobs or taking action on climate change. We need leadership with vision to blaze the trail for nature in the region, in a way that works for people and the planet.”
